Annual Progress Sharing workshop 2024

The Annual Progress Sharing Workshop of 2024 for the Provati3 Project - DDM Component has been held on January 29, 2025 at the Crystal Ballroom of Intercontinental Dhaka. Mr. K.M. Abdul Wadud, Additional Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief graced the ceremony as the Chief Guest. The event was presided over by Md. Razwanur Rahman, Director General, Department of Disaster Management. Mr. Gopal Krishna Debnath, Chief Engineer, Local Government Engineering Department (LGED); Mr. Md. Zohirul Islam, Additional Director, Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB); Mr. Valentine Achancho, Country Director for Bangladesh for the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and Mr. Ahmadul Haque, Director (Admin) and Additional Secretary, Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) attended the workshop as Special Guests. Mr. Anisul Wahab Khan, Superintending Engineer, LGED and Project Director, Provati3 Project, and Mr. Netai Chandra Dey Sarker, Director, Monitoring & Information Management and Project Coordinator, Provati3 Project - DDM Component were also present in the ceremony and shared their valuable insights into the project’s goals, objectives, and accomplishments. The workshop provided a comprehensive overview of the progress made across all activities under the project until December 2024. A total of 53 representatives from government ministries, departments, and institutions, academia, development partners, and non-governmental organizations participated in the event. Participants came up with spontaneous suggestions and feedback about the project activities while they took part in an open discussion session moderated by the Chairperson, Md. Razwanur Rahman, Director General, DDM. The insights and recommendations received from the partners and stakeholders will guide future path of the project and inspire the parties involved to leverage on the synergy of this community of practice in disaster management.

National Level Stakeholders Training workshop on Flood Early warning and Risk Management

● The training workshop on early warning was arranged for national level stakeholders from different sectors at the Department of Disaster Management on 7 January 2025. The training was presided by the Project Coordinator of PROVATi3-DDM component and Director MIM, Department of Disaster Management, Mr. Netai Chandra Dey Sarker. The Director General of Department of Disaster Management, Razwanur Rahman, attended the training session online as the honorable Chief Guest. Mr. Anjon Chandra Paul and Mr. Dr. Md Habibullah Bahar, joint Secretary, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) was present as special guest in the training program. LGED, FFWC, BWDB, District Relief and Rehabilitation Officers (DRRO), representatives from Department of Agriculture, Public Health Department, Directors and Deputy Directors from DDM, Joint Secretaries from MoDMR, representatives from D Department of Livestock, Department of Public Health Engineering, Department of Agriculture Extension, Bangladesh Meteorological Department, Bangladesh Water Development Board, DGHS, Department of Fisheries, University of Dhaka and other govt. institutes were present in the training program. The training sessions were facilitated by the Project Coordinator and representatives from FFWC and RIMES.

DMC Portal Training

A Disaster Management Committee database was developed under this project with the technical support of RIMES containing the information (Name, phone no, designation, affiliation and email) of all level DMC members. As this DMC committee reforms every year, it is important to update them from the root level or by respective DMC member. For this reason, representatives of each DMC members need to be trained on how to search for DMC members list; update, edit or delete information, upload DMC meeting resolution or additional things of the portal. Total of 14 trainings have been completed, and 9 DMC portal trainings remain to be done.

Flood Early Warning and Risk Management Training

There is a provision of one training per upazila where Disaster Management Committee (DMC) members would be trained up on basic disaster terminologies, flood early warning and their roles and responsibilities during disasters. All training sessions were inaugurated by Director General of Disaster Management Md. Mizanur Rahman and presided over by the Project Coordinator. The training sessions were facilitated by the Project Coordinator, Sub-Project Coordinator representatives from FFWC and RIMES.

Annual Progress Sharing Workshop

The annual progress-sharing workshop was held on 5th April 2023 at the Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel. State minister of Disaster Management and Relief Ministry Dr. Md. Enamur Rahman MP was the chief guest and Director General of Department of Disaster Management Md Mijanur Rahman presided the workshop. Special guests were MoDMR Secretary Md. Kamrul Hasan NDC, Guest of Honor BWDB Additional Director General Amirul Haq Bhuiyan and LGED Chief Engineer Sk. Md. Mohsin. In the workshop, overall progress since inception of the project till March 2023 was presented and asked for comments on the activities.

Technical Advisory Committee Meeting

A Technical Advisory Committee has been established to oversee several key activities, including the development of baseline survey methodology and tools, the review of baseline survey reports, consultation on danger levels, finalization of land gauge locations, and the preparation of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials. The committee comprises representatives from the following organizations: Department of Disaster Management (DDM), Local Government Engineering Department (LGED), Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD), and University of Dhaka (DU).

Topographic Survey

A topographic survey has been conducted since December 2022 and has already been completed in Saghata, Fhulchari, Sundarganj, Sadullahpur of Gaibandha district, and on the river banks of Madarganj upazila of Jamalpur district.In this survey, LiDAR drone is being used which provides high resolution images. This finer resolution images will help to generate more accurate inundation map. A total of 703 square kilometers have been covered till June 2023 and work is ongoing in the remaining areas.

Baseline Survey

A baseline survey was conducted in the project area in 2022. The survey was conducted among 1531 participants in the project area. The survey was conducted to assess the needs of local communities regarding regular flood situation, existing flood early warning system and the nessecity of accurate and reliable flood early warning system.

National Level Inception Workshop

A National level Inception Workshop on the Development of Local Flood Early Warning and Dissemination System under PROVATi3 Project-DDM Component was held on October 30, 2021, at InterContinental Dhaka, Bangladesh. The inception workshop served as a forum for open discussion and collaboration on local level flood warning and dissemination systems. Honorable State Minister Dr. Enamur Rahman, MP, Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief (MoDMR) was present as the Chief Guest and Md. Mohsin, Secretary, MoDMR chaired the program. Govt officials from MoDRM, DDM, LGED, and Representatives from IWFM-BUET, DU, IFAD, CARE Bangladesh, Islamic Relief Bangladesh, Concern Worldwide, IFRC, GRC attended the workshop. Raihanul Haque Khan, Country Program Lead RIMES; Nazmul Ahasan, Country IT Lead-RIMES, and other RIMES team members were present there.
